This project begins by rethinking the Recipe book as a tool through experimentation and deconstruction. The objective is to propose different ways of reading instructions and to consider our relationship with them, including language, idiom, action, experience, culture, tradition, and patriotism.

The recipe I chose to examine is “Crema Catalana,” also known as the “Crème brûlée” in the Catalan region. The recipe I’m using as a starting point is one that my grandmother had when she took cooking lessons in Barcelona a long time ago.


There are three categories that you can also find in the first map: context, language, and making/experience. In the context, I present the scenario on which the recipe is based by using romanticizations and exaltations of certain rituals, with a touch of humor, while staying true to the way recipes are written.

The language section involves analyzing constructions, verbs, and punctuation, as well as the differences between a traditional Catalan recipe written in Spanish and its English translation.

The last part, the making/experience, shows how images, thoughts, and maps can help us understand a recipe and the experience of making it. In this case, it shows how I made it.
